As the weather begins to change and temperatures (hopefully) begin to dip in our home base of Atlanta, a team of Georgia Aquarium researchers are making their way south to the Galapagos Islands. This archipelago, or island group, is an Ecuadorian territory located 700 miles off the west coast of South America and plays host to a transient group of large female whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) that may answer some of scientists’ looming questions.

Even though Atlanta is two hundred miles from the ocean, we are still connected by various river systems that serve as a direct link to the sea. It’s important to remember that we’re all connected to our world ocean this way. Our actions at home can affect the environment directly around us and the environment hundreds of miles away.

Today we are celebrating World Rivers Day! This international holiday has been celebrated since 2005, with more than 60 countries and millions of people participating each year. World Rivers Day is important to celebrate because it allows us to highlight our local river systems, as well as those across the globe.

The Stars of Sea Otter Awareness Week

Join us in celebrating our sea otters and sea otters around the world during Sea Otter Awareness Week beginning Sept. 18 through Sept. 24. Special educational activities will take place in our atrium on Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. You will have the opportunity to learn more about our Southern sea otters and additional information about how you can help with the conservation of sea otters. Our Georgia-Pacific Cold Water Quest is home to five Southern sea otters, two of which arrived when the Aquarium opened in 2005 and three others who were rescued in 2010.
